DIY Duct Tape Double Badge ID Holder

Recently my badge holder broke so I thought it was fun to make a badge holder using materials I have lying around at home.

I remember there were wallets that were made from duct tape and tyvek envelopes so why not a badge holder? They are supposedly really durable yet cheap too.

The badge holder allows me to slot up to 3 cards but I would need only 2.

So seeing this, I decided to sketch out an idea of how to make one out with some estimated measurements.

Tentatively, I need a couple of things:

  • Duct tape fabric (similar function to the faux leather for shape and form)
  • Metal Ring (for the lanyard to attach, cannibalized from my original badge holder)
  • Clear plastic to display my badge

Making the Duct Tape Fabric

This is going to be the backing of the badge holder.

There is actually a lot of attractive duct tape with patterns and designs but I only have the black one at home. So if you have a pretty looking one, it will make it look even better.

Lay 2 strips of duct tape with approximately 10% overlap. Apply the duct tape slowly to prevent any bubbles forming. Make the final piece bigger as you will need a bit more to make the strap which holds the metal ring. You can trim away the excess too.

Flip the duct tape strips over and start layering more duct tape, this time perpendicular to the horizontal strips, overlapping as well. Remember to go slow so that you won't get bubbles.

Here's how it should look like once you trimmed down to size with a extra piece to serve as the strap.

Making the Clear Plastic Windows

I tried with very poor success to recycle the existing badge holder's plastic windows. There's quite a bit of residues stuck to the plastic so I would have to look for something else.

Fortunately, I had a plastic cover which the Nintendo Switch aluminium back cover came with for the last post.

I measured and cut out the plastic windows. I made some markings so I would be able to use duct tape to tape it to the duct tape fabric we made earlier.

Apply duct tape to the edges for both pieces.

Fold one of the edges, this would be where the card would be slotting in on the badge holder.

It should look like this for each side.

Align the plastic window and the duct tape fabric. For a double badge holder, you will have one plastic window on the bottom on one end, and another plastic window on the top on the other end. See the sketch above for an idea.

Attach the plastic window to the duct tape fabric by folding the sticky tape edges to the duct tape fabric.

Trim the corners so the bottom piece looks like this. Then fold it over to attach to the duct tape fabric.

Repeat it for the other side of the duct tape fabric.

Making the Strap with the Metal Ring

Fold the badge holder.

Align the short piece of duct tape fabric you cut out just now to the back of the folded badge holder.

Tape the strap down with a small strip of duct tape.

Slide the metal ring on to the strap, then fold the strap and tape it down with a larger piece of duct tape.

Completion

And we are done!

Here are pictures of the finished product.

Starting with the back.

The front with a card slotted in.

The inside with a card slotted in.

Not too shabby.

What do you think?

Happy crafting as always.
